How this is calculated, and why it is a range
The same batter poured into a smaller pan has to go somewhere, so it goes upward. That is the whole idea behind this calculator, and it is worth seeing the steps.
- Work out both pan areas. A round pan is π × radius². A square or rectangular pan is length × width.
- Compare them. Old area divided by new area gives you the depth multiplier. A 9 inch round is 63.6 sq in and an 8 inch round is 50.3 sq in, so the batter sits 63.6 ÷ 50.3 = 1.27 times as deep.
- Move the time in the same direction, but not one for one. This is the honest part. If bake time tracked depth exactly, 30 minutes would become 38. It does not track exactly, so we give a range.
The range has two ends, and they come from two things pulling in opposite directions:
The low end assumes the time changes less than the depth does. Whatever the depth, the surface still has to set, color and dry out, and that part takes roughly the same time in any pan. That drags the answer back toward the original time.
The high end assumes the time changes more than the depth does. Heat has to travel from the outside to the center, and in pure conduction the time for that grows roughly with the square of the distance, not in step with it. That pushes the answer further out.
Real bakes land between the two, which is why we show both instead of splitting the difference and pretending to know. There is no published constant for this. Anyone who gives you a single exact new bake time for a pan swap is choosing a model and not telling you which one.
Be clear This is an estimate, and the toothpick outranks it
A calculator cannot see your oven, your pan's color and thickness, how cold your butter was, how much you creamed it, or whether your oven runs 25 °F hot. Any of those moves the finish line more than the arithmetic above does.
Treat the number as a time to start paying attention, not a time to take the bake out. The tests below are the actual answer, and an instant read thermometer is the most reliable of them by a wide margin.
One more thing this calculator cannot do for you: a deeper bake usually needs a lower temperature as well as a longer time. If you only add time, the outside keeps cooking at the original rate for all those extra minutes and you get a dark crust around a wet middle. Drop the oven 25 °F when the batter gets noticeably deeper. The tool says so above when it applies, and the oven temperature converter will give you the new number in Celsius and gas mark.
Doneness reference: the tests that actually decide
Internal temperature is the closest thing baking has to a definite answer. Push an instant read thermometer into the middle, avoiding the pan base. This is the part worth screenshotting.

Ranges rather than single numbers because published figures vary by a few degrees and because the temperature keeps climbing after the pan leaves the oven, particularly in a deep bake. Take custards out at the low end. Aim at the middle of the range for everything else.

Questions bakers actually ask
How much longer does a cake take in a smaller pan?
It depends on how much smaller, because what matters is depth rather than diameter. Going from a 9 inch round to an 8 inch round sounds like a small change, but the area drops by about 21%, so the batter sits about 27% deeper and a 30 minute bake becomes roughly 35 to 45 minutes.
Going the other way is faster than people expect. The same batter spread into a 9 by 13 pan is shallow, and a 35 minute cake can be done in 22 to 28 minutes. Set a timer early. Shallow bakes go from underdone to dry in a very short window.
Do I need to lower the oven temperature too?
If the batter gets noticeably deeper, yes. Adding time alone means the outside keeps cooking at the original rate for every extra minute, which gives you a dark, dry edge around an underbaked middle. Dropping the oven 25 °F lets the heat reach the center before the outside overcooks.
As a rough guide, drop 25 °F when the batter is more than about 15% deeper, and consider dropping it and splitting the batter between two pans when it is more than half again as deep. If the batter gets shallower, keep the temperature as it is; it will simply be done sooner.
How do I know when a cake is done?
Use two tests together. The quick one is touch: press the center lightly and it should spring back rather than hold a dent. The definite one is temperature: an instant read thermometer in the middle should show 200 to 210 °F for a butter cake, 200 to 205 °F for a quick bread.
The skewer test sits between them. A few moist crumbs clinging to the skewer means done. Wet batter means keep going. A completely dry, clean skewer often means you have gone a few minutes too far, which is the most common way home bakes turn out dry.
Custards and cheesecakes are the exception. Take those out when the center still wobbles as a set piece, at about 170 to 180 °F, because they carry on setting as they cool.
Why can't the calculator just tell me the exact time?
Because there is no exact time to tell you. Bake time depends on pan material and color, oven calibration, whether a fan is running, rack position, batter temperature, how much air you creamed into it, and how often the door gets opened. The pan change is one variable among many, and it is not even the biggest one.
Any calculator that returns a single confident number is hiding that. We would rather give you a range, show the arithmetic behind it, and point you at the doneness tests that settle it in your kitchen.
Can I bake a 9 by 13 recipe in two round pans?
Usually yes, and it is one of the most common swaps. A 9 by 13 pan is 117 sq in, and two 9 inch rounds come to about 127 sq in, so the batter sits slightly shallower than the recipe intended. Bake at the same temperature and start checking around 5 to 10 minutes early.
Trying to fit the whole 9 by 13 batter into a single 9 inch round is a different story. The batter would be nearly twice as deep, which usually means overflow, a sunken middle, or both. Split it, or use the recipe scaler to make less batter.
Does a glass or dark pan change the time?
Yes, and often by more than a pan size change does. Dark and nonstick metal absorbs radiant heat and browns hard, so bakes finish earlier and edges can overcook. Glass and ceramic take longer to warm up but then hold heat and keep cooking after the dish leaves the oven.
The common advice for both is to drop the oven 25 °F and check early. Light colored aluminum is the neutral case, and it is what most recipe times assume.
Can I open the oven to check?
Yes, once the bake is set. Opening the door in the first two thirds of a cake's time lets out heat while the structure is still liquid, which is a real way to make a cake sink. After the top is domed and dry looking, a quick look costs you very little.
Use the oven light for the early part, and save the door for the actual test. When you do open it, be quick and be organized: know what you are testing before the door moves.
Can I use this for cupcakes or a loaf?
For a loaf pan, yes, treating it as a rectangle of its top dimensions. It is an approximation because loaf pans slope inward, so the real depth change is slightly smaller than the calculator says.
For cupcakes, no. Going from a cake pan to a muffin tin changes the shape so completely that depth arithmetic does not carry over. As a rule, cupcakes from a standard cake batter bake at the same temperature for 18 to 22 minutes, and a filled cup should be about two thirds full.
